Basic Mistakes

RootsWorks is a site devoted to the use of generic technologies in family history.

  • Flash past 10 feet. As you can see in the first photo to the right, your flash is not going to light up everything you want. It will light what it can and that's it. Think about lighting the shot.

  • Face in the center. Don't put the subject's most interesting features in the center of the shot. Use the "Rule of Thirds." Put them at one of the intersections of the vertical and horizontal lines that mark off thirds of the image, as show in the second photo to the right.

  • Wrong Light on the subject. You want the light to bounce off the subject and into your lens. But not too much light - put them in open shade, not bright sunlight, if possible. That squint isn't what you want to remember.

  • Batteries and chargers. You need a lot of power to take 400 digital pictures. Get plenty of batteries.

  • Read the Manual. Today's cameras have many features. Use the manual to learn the basics.
