Comparison of Scanned and Digitally Photographed Birth Certificate

As you probably know, images captured at different resolutions are different sizes. The images displayed below have been resized for the purpose of comparison. If you click on one, you can see the original image, at it's original size. None of these images has been enhanced since being scanned or photographed. Many thanks to Laura Prescott, the Genealogy Mac Lady, and the moderator of the Macintosh Forum on the RootsWorks board, for creating the original images. I've taken the liberty of removing the individual's name from each image.

Please note the file sizes for each image. The largest is over 2 megabytes, and will take a long time to download if you are on dial-up.

This image was cropped from a shot made with a 3-megapixel camera, without using the flash. The contrast appears to be better than when the flash is used. The original image is 1371x786 pixels, and the jpg file size is 278kb.

This is the same image as above, using the flash. The flash appears to wash out the text, and the seal. The original image is 1600x1200 pixels, and the jpg file size is 406kb.

This is the same certificate, scanned at 300 dpi and then resized. The original image size is 1573x972 pixels, and the jpg file size is 643 kb.  This image is very similar, in quality, to the first image. The photo shows the seal more clearly.

This is the same certificate, scanned at 600 dpi and resized. The original image size is 3146x1943 pixels, and the jpg file size is 2,160 kb. These text characters are by far the sharpest. The seal is still not as easy to see as in the first image.
